This and the preceding 2 pieces were inspired by Traci Bautista’s book, Collage Unleashed. It’s a great book that really breaks down the conventions of what makes art, both in imagery and techniques. She uses a lot of ordinary, easily available materials such as paper towels (!) and encourages doodling and “repurposing” previous pieces of art. The book has given me permission to do whatever I wanted without thinking it through first.

I learned how to needle felt last fall for the purpose of someday making heads for art dolls. I hadn’t touched it since. Somebody over at the Artella Cafe website mentioned needlefelting and so today I thought I’d try making a heart. I really enjoyed it. The face came alive under my needle. I was laughing when I made the mouth.

Starting to break out of the big-heart-in-the-center-of-the-image mold. In my “rules” I defined heArt-a-Day as anything that contained a heart in it somewhere.
