Erzulie Freda is the voudun loa of love and sexuality. I’m not a voodoo practitioner, but I intuitively sense the loas as sort of cousins. They seem to be keeping an eye out for me even though I’m not a follower. I don’t know why I’ve been adopted this way as I am of northern european ancestry, but they seem to have taken up permanent residence on the “stoop” at the edge of my consciousness.
I have a blog about the norse/germanic goddess Freya, and I am sure that the “Freda” in Erzulie Freda is directly related to Freya. They have some similarities and perhaps that’s where my connection comes in.
At any rate, I felt a strong intuitive nudge to make this plaque of Erzulie Freda’s veve and to offer it for sale on eBay. If you’d like to learn more about Erzulie Freda please see my friend “voodoomama’s” website, The Mystic Voodoo.
I am also inspired by having seen a temporary exhibit of work by the Haitian voodoo artist Edouard Duval-Carrié at a nearby museum last year. It was the most powerful art i have ever seen. See a sample here. Haitian voodoo art is becoming a highly respected art form.
This is a small wood plaque, about 4 x 6 inches, with the design wood burned. It is painted in pale shell pink and pearlescent medium. The edges have been covered with “gold” leaf and gold iridescent powder. It is sort of “shabby chic” combined with folk art painting. It looks like it came from a european estate. The front of the plaque has been coated with triple glaze gloss acrylic varnish.
