heArts #120-123 Free Heart Art Background Papers Monday, Feb 11 2008

Yes, there’s more! I’m in a creative Valentine’s heart art frenzy!

Once again, these were made in Photoshop using slightly altered brushes from Graphics-Illustrations and Obsidian Dawn. And again, if you use these and post them anywhere on the web, I’d like credit and a link back, please, as well as credit to the brush makers.

Also, when I say non-commercial, I mean no mass reproduction, no putting it up on Zazzle or Cafepress, etc. But if you can print it out and make some handmade art from it and sell it…go for it! Check with Graphics-Illustrations and Obsidian Dawn first, though. Not sure what their policy is in that case.

You can download these by right clicking here, or left click and you will be taken to Flickr where you will have a range of size choices by clicking on the “all sizes” icon above the image.

heArts # 116-119 Free Heart Pattern Backgrounds for Valentines Saturday, Feb 9 2008

As I promised yesterday, here are four different backgrounds I made for you to download and use in your Valentine’s Day cards, scrapbooking, etc.. You could even use them for wrapping paper. I used Photoshop (as usual), this time using the shape tool and the standard shapes that come with PS.

If you think they look like a quilt patterns that’s not a coincidence. I’ve always had quilters in my family. My maternal grandmother hand pieced a beautiful red and white nine patch quilt (1 inch pieces) the year before she died. She was around ninety years old. I think I get my life long love of red and white from her.

You can right click on any of these and “save image as” (at least in Firefox), or you can click on the image and go to Flickr where you’ll have a larger size selection to chose from by clicking on the tiny “all images” icon above the image. The two backgrounds with the smaller overall pattern are just slightly different in color. One is more brown for those of you who are like me and think a little burnt sienna makes all art better. All images were uploaded as 3 x 3 inches at 300 dpi.

Just a reminder, these are for personal use only and if you use it anywhere on the web (like as a Myspace background), please give me credit and a link back to this page. You can alter it for collages or cards or whatever, though.

heArt 101: Digital Scrapbook or Collage Freebies Plus Tutorial Saturday, Dec 29 2007

This heart art is my attempt at digital scrapbooking. Below are some of the details as to how I created it, as well as a background and a couple of heart elements free for the taking. Note: If it has heartaday written on it, don’t take it. In fact, if you take the freebies and use them (I’d love attribution), send it to me and I’ll feature it here in an entry in the future.

heArt #101 Classically Trained Cat II

When I was getting my art degree, one of the professors drilled into our heads “less is more”. I try to abide by that, but I tend to lean towards chaos, adding more and more in a desperate attempt to make it better. My inner critic doesn’t like this piece very much as a whole, but I decided to post it anyway. I read somewhere that sometimes we don’t do art for ourselves, but for someone in our audience in an intuitive sort of way. That gives me some comfort here.

Those of you that think the text is a rip off of the I Can Has Cheezburger blog, you’re right. I can’t get enough of that! It’s my own cat sitting on my parlor grand piano.

Below is the abbreviated version of how I did this all in Photoshop. Now, I don’t claim to be an expert at Photoshop by any means so if I’m doing something “wrong” to any PS geeks out there, let it go. This is my messy way of doing things.

Mini Tutorial

I started out with the flower picture below which is a macro photo I took of a common weed in the yard I call Creeping Charlie (also known as ground ivy). Noxious weed, beautiful glow-in-the-twilight lavender flowers. I’d retouched this photo at an earlier time.

heArt #86 Japanese Heart Flowers

Digitally created design using Photoshop and a graphic tablet. I drew a “heart flower” then copied it and manipulated the colors with gradients. I didn’t start out going for a japanese design, but that’s where I ended up. This would make great background paper for digital scrapbooking.

heArt #44 “Heart Flower Pattern #1″ Sunday, Jul 22 2007

“Painting” in Photoshop again and learning how to make patterns. Seems like there must be a better way than the way I ended up doing it, which was more labor intensive than it seemed necessary, even with the aid of the “offset” option. I’m not sure what I’ll do with these patterns I’m creating. Possible textures for Second Life? Digital Scrapbook “paper”?

heArt #43 “heArt Bouquet #1″ Friday, Jul 20 2007

Photoshop painting with graphic tablet. If I ever figure out how to get the same effect with paint, etc., I will make real life pieces. Digital painting rocks, though. No washing of brushes and any color I can imagine with a tap of my graphic pen. Erase what I don’t like, pile layer upon layer and experiment…I think I have finally found my medium.
